[West Coast Media Jobs] With open roles at Deadline, KTLA, Berkeleyside & more!
And a freelance writing opportunity at Spotify, where I work!
Hey everyone,
Starting this week’s newsletter off with a freelance writing opportunity from the Spotify studio I currently work at, Parcast.
It’s an opportunity dear to me, because I started writing for Parcast as a freelancer in 2017 (before it was acquired by Spotify in 2019). Now, I’m part of the full-time writer staff that edits and gives feedback on freelance scripts.

Excited to share this opportunity with all of you below! Before we get to the job listing, please note the following:
As you can see below, I’m not the hiring manager. I have no influence on who gets hired. But you are welcome to let Alex (the hiring manager) know you heard about the gig from me (Mallory) in this newsletter.
Having written and edited many, many scripts, I highly recommend having knowledge of creative storytelling, such as three-act structure, character arcs, and scene structure. These scripts do have journalistic elements to them (there is a lot of research involved!), but they are written in a storytelling narrative.
With that said, no prior podcast writing experience is required, just a willingness to learn, follow our format, and tell engaging true stories. If you’re interested in trying out podcast writing, this is a great opportunity to do it!
And finally, here’s the job listing:
Parcast, the premier storytelling podcast network focused on creating scripted programming that is engaging, informative, and entertaining, is seeking freelance writers to start in the beginning of the new year. Writers work remotely, working from an assigned episode topic, and then receiving feedback from in-house editors. Current shows include SERIAL KILLERS, CULTS, CONSPIRACY THEORIES, and many more.
The starting rate is $23/hour, with the expectation of about 30 hours per week, and there is opportunity for growth.
Those interested should submit 2 writing samples and their resume to Alex Benedon at abenedon at spotify dot com, with the subject header "Parcast Submission." We are open to any type of content/format that you want to submit, though please keep in mind that we are looking for writers with a strong sense of story and an ability to craft drama and tension. Attention to grammar and formatting are also expected.
If you’re looking for a job, leave a comment about what you’re looking for on our November Gig Seekers Thread. It’s open to everyone; you don’t need to be a subscriber or based on the West Coast to participate.
If you’re a hiring manager, check out these talented journalists!
December’s thread will be sent out on Dec. 15th.
Some housekeeping stuff: Like everyone else, this newsletter will be taking some time off in late December! There won’t be editions sent out on Dec. 23 or 30th, but it’ll be back in your inbox on Jan. 6th, 2021.
From the Parcast Union: We’re counting down the #12DaysOfBargaining until our first bargaining date on Dec. 15th! Check out the Twitter campaign with amazing art by fellow bargaining committee member Lauren Delisle.
Virtual Career Fair: Hearst Connecticut Media is holding a virtual career fair on Dec. 10th at noon (ET). Sign up here.
From Study Hall: List of publications that are/are not accepting freelance pitches. This is an essential link for freelancing right now.
Grants to aid freelancers during COVID-19: ICYMI, I’ve got a Twitter thread compiling them — I’m still adding to the thread as I find more.
What to Watch: I’ve been watching Industry on HBO Max. If you like Succession, you’ll probably love this British-American drama about a group of investment bankers vying to keep their jobs at a London firm. The score is amazing.
Things of Note is now open to submissions! Submit your own links, pop culture recs, and stuff of note for future consideration.
