West Coast Media Jobs - 8/26/20
Back with open roles at The AV Club, BuzzFeed, the USA Today Network & more!
Hey everyone,
I took off for one week and . . . so much has happened. I hope you’re all doing well and staying as safe as you can.
I wanted to start off with some good news: hiring is happening! This week, I received a few emails from subscribers who have landed great journalism jobs. I love hearing about your wins — and we could all use some good news right now, right?
I know the job search can sometimes feel hopeless and demoralizing — as I’ve told many of you, I’ve been there countless times, including earlier this year. But let this be your encouragement. Media companies are still hiring. Don’t give up. Keep applying. You got this.
Now, onto the jobs . . .

If you’re looking for a job, leave a comment about what you’re looking for on our August Gig Seekers Thread. It’s open to everyone; you don’t need to be a subscriber or based on the West Coast to participate.
If you’re a hiring manager, check out these talented journalists!

From Poynter: How to think of your career goals in 2020; 30+ resources for freelancers
From the New York Times: On Brick House, a news cooperative offering subscriptions to nine small publications for $75 a year; Sterling K. Brown and Andre Braugher’s Lives Keep Intersecting
Events: ONA’s Women’s Leadership Accelerator: Summer Series kicks off on 8/27
What to Watch: I was an entertainment editor in another life, so making TV show recommendations feels like second nature. Aggrestuko’s third season drops on Netflix on 8/27 and while it may just look like a cute Sanrio cartoon, its 15-minute episodes pack some of the sharpest critiques of the workplace, social media, and millennial culture that I’ve ever seen. Also, the new Bill & Ted, a nostalgic fave, will be released on 8/28. I can’t wait!
From Study Hall: List of publications that are/are not accepting freelance pitches. This is an essential link for freelancing right now.
Grants to aid freelancers during COVID-19: ICYMI, I’ve got a Twitter thread compiling them — I’m still adding to the thread as I find more.
For levity: The New York Times on Garden Marcus’ wonderful TikTok, which you should definitely follow;

Reminder: Due to the lack of journalism jobs out there, I’ve been included some copywriting, social media marketing, and internal comms jobs to give you the best chance at landing a role.
