Happy Saturday! Are you looking for a full-time job? A new freelance gig? Well, the Monthly Gig Seekers Thread is here to help.
Sent out monthly on the 15th, it works just like those Twitter threads that are designed to promote writers for hire: reply with a short pitch about who you are and what kind of work you’re looking for, whether its full-time, part-time, or freelance.
But this is a Substack thread, so that means unlike Twitter, there’s no character limit. Share a link to your portfolio. Talk more about your career goals. Link to a few pieces of work you’re proud of. Up to you.
Participation isn’t limited to subscribers or West Coast-based journalists. All are welcome. If you already posted in last month’s thread, feel free to post an update on what you’ve been up to or if you’re looking to cover new topics/beats. These days, a lot can change in a month.
The thread will be promoted via the newsletter and our social media all month…until the next thread arrives.
Hi! My name is Alex Piscatelli, and I'm seeking full-time work, though I'm open to freelance. I have more than four years of experience working in social media, including my time at E! News and KPBS, San Diego's PBS and NPR affiliate. I'm hoping for a role that incorporates podcasts, political engagement and/or sex education, but I'm open to all opportunities in social media and writing.
I have a podcast called dating or at least trying (datingoratleasttrying.com), which is all about normalizing conversations surrounding dating, sex and relationships. I'm launching a new podcast at the end of this month called What a Week, which will be news and current events-related. Updates to come on our Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/whataweekshow/)! I've also just began my ~freelancing journey~ and write about dating and relationships.
I LOVE connecting with people on Twitter, and I hold monthly young professional panels that I announce there. Feel free to connect with me: https://twitter.com/alexpiscatelli
Hello, all! My name is Mario A. Cortez. I am an award-wining writer and reporter currently looking for a full-time writing position in news or public relations. I have over five years of writing and reporting experience across college media, full time positions, and freelance gigs.
I am currently a freelance contributor to Eater, San Diego Magazine, Remezcla, The San Diego Reader, and The Daily Chela. In my last full-time position I was the communication's director for San Diego 1904 FC, the city's first professional men's soccer team. Prior to that I was the Arts and Culture editor and a reporter for La Prensa San Diego, the city's largest Latino weekly. I am fully bilingual in Spanish and English and have a strong photographic background as well.
My name is Juan Charlie Vargas and I am a recent graduate looking to get it in the field of politics, news and culture reporting. I am looking for part-time, full-time, and freelance work. I am currently pitching publications as a freelancer but am actively looking for employment.
My name is Carlignon Jones and I am a broadcast journalist looking for a full-time gig in entertainment journalism. I'm currently Texas-based but I am hoping to relocate to the Los Angeles area soon. I can do multiple things including writing, social media, camera work, and editing.
I am a hard worker with a great attitude and a knack for finding good stories. Here is my online portfolio: carlignonjones.com
I'm a multimedia journalist based in Mexico City (was in the process of relocating to LA before the pandemic and am staying in Mexico until ???). I do all sorts of things: writing, radio, TV, and documentary. I'm a regular contributor to NPR (here's my most recent report on coronavirus in Mexico: https://www.npr.org/2020/07/30/895698797/if-coronavirus-doesn-t-kill-me-hunger-will-mexico-s-poor-bear-brunt-of-pandemic) and most often cover migration and refugee issues in the Americas for NPR.
Apart from NPR, I've been published in outlets like Washington Post, BBC, Financial Times, Vox, Teen Vogue, ESPN, and The Telegraph. My TV production work has appeared in PBS NewsHour and I've worked on documentary radio for NPR, BBC, and Cited. My short documentary film, "The Waitlist" produced with Doha Debates, was an official selection of the 2019 Immigration Film Fest and the 2020 LA Indie Film Festival.
I'm available for commissions and part-time work in any of my areas of experience. Here's a list of clips in each:
Hi everyone! My name is Taylor Balkom and I'm a Portland-based freelance photojournalist. I'm looking for freelance assignments (or full or part-time work!) in the Portland, Oregon area.
I've spent the last year and a half shooting mostly prep sports for The Oregonian, but I'm not just a sports photographer. I spent three years in Ketchikan, Alaska, working for the Ketchikan Daily News and covering everything the vibrant town of 13,000 had to offer — from field trips and retirement parties to totem pole raisings and salmon derbies.
I'm also no stranger to written reporting, I wrote multiple news, sports and feature stories during my time in Ketchikan in addition to writing game recaps for The Oregonian.
I'm dedicated to this profession and feel it is my calling to be a journalist. I'm hard-working, thorough and passionate about what I do.

For more than 35 years, I have been a professional writer and journalist, spending the bulk of my time writing about health, the business of healthcare, and the people who work in the industry. I’ve covered topics as mundane as ear infections and flu shots and as esoteric as cost containment for cardiac care. My writing has been directed at just about every healthcare stakeholder there is: nurses, patients, parents, physicians, insurance executives, hospital administrators, even medical coders. It has appeared in newspapers such as the Seattle Times, on websites such as Fiercehealthcare.com, and in magazines such as HealthLeaders. I have also written for professional newsletter publishers such as AHC Media and custom publishers like True North. Currently, I am a regular contributor to Remedy Health’s EndocrineWeb.com.
I’m a freelance writer and essayist looking for a full time reporting/writing job, though I’m always open to freelance opportunities. I cover all things health (healthcare, environmental hazards, mental health, you name it). I’m interested in any story about inequality and/or injustice.
I'm a business reporting intern at the San Francisco Chronicle and recent Brown University grad, and I'm looking for full-time reporting jobs as I wrap up my internship. I'm especially interested in tech reporting — I've covered cybersecurity and tech policy at Bloomberg Law in DC, and I wrote my thesis about surveillance tech in the Middle East.
I'm eager to to chat with anyone who might be looking to hire. Please feel free to connect with me on Twitter (@anna_c_kramer), where you can see some of my work, and/or LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/anna-kramer-718877145/
Though I'm looking for full-time work (editing, reporting, writing--whichever), I won't turn down good freelance work on environmental, criminal justice, civil rights, lifestyle, or even just a fun profile. Here's a link to some of my better work, and thank you: https://anthonypignataro.com/some-of-my-better-journalism/
