Are you looking for a full-time job? A new freelance gig? Well, the Quarterly Gig Seekers Thread is here.
Sent out quarterly on the 15th of January, April, July, and October, it works just like those Twitter threads that are designed to promote media folks for hire: reply in the comments below with a short pitch about who you are and what kind of work you’re looking for, whether it’s full-time, part-time, or freelance.
But this is a Substack thread, so that means, unlike Twitter, there’s no character limit. Share a link to your portfolio. Talk more about your career goals. Link to a few pieces of work you’re proud of. Up to you.
Participation isn’t limited to subscribers or West Coast-based people. All are welcome. If you already posted in last month’s thread, feel free to post an update on what you’ve been up to or if you’re looking to cover new topics/beats.
The thread will be promoted via the newsletter and our social media all season…until the next thread arrives.

Currently seeking part-time and freelance positions.
I'm Amber, a Florida-based editor with a love for long-form audio and book projects. I've worked with everyone from Brookings to Spotify on projects ranging from a working group on compulsory voting to one of Spotify's top true-crime podcasts, Serial Killers.

Hello, my name is Jody and I'm currently finishing a Master's in Media + Communications in London (at the moment I'm in the thick of a dissertation about the design choices of right-wing "fake news" sites). In December I'll be back home in the Bay Area, and I will need a job!
For nine years I was with The Bay Bridged, a long-standing music website serving the Bay Area that closed in 2021. For the last five years of my time there I served as Content Director, leading all editorial decisions. Beyond that I worked as a full-time freelancer, picking up a whole host of odd editorial jobs from editing health information articles to writing trivia questions for an app. Going forward I am simply interested in stable work. I love working in news, but as I think all of us here know it's not a sustainable lifestyle. If I get a job in journalism again, great, but overall I love bringing creative work to life and helping others do the same.
In addition to the arts I am passionate about media literacy, so I'd also be open to teaching or working on news curation teams. I also had some success managing the newsletter at TBB, and I'd be interested in exploring that more if anyone's willing to take a chance on me.
I'm Matt, based in Oakland. I've had kind of an eclectic path through media and tech: I started as a newspaper copy editor in Omaha and D.C. before moving to California and into online media. I ran the Standards team (editing, fact-checking) at Upworthy for about four years.
Most recently, I led a team of ~30 curators as Head of Curation at Medium. That role built upon my experience in content standards/quality, and I added a lot of experience working cross-functionally with Product and Engineering, Trust & Safety, and many other teams at Medium.
I'm seeking both freelance work and a full-time role. I'm interested in:
- content quality/standards, editing, fact-checking, etc.
- content/community moderation, rules enforcement, etc.
- managing remote teams (I've been doing this since well before Covid!)
But I'm also taking this time to reassess my future, my values, etc. The best way I've found to do that is to talk to as many interesting people as possible, so if you fancy a chat, please reach out! https://www.linkedin.com/in/msavener/
My name is Martha, I'm an Irish journalist living in San Francisco. I'm currently working as a local news reporter but would love to get back into some freelance feature writing.
Before moving here, I completed a two year training program with The Irish Times, Ireland's leading national paper. While there, I spent a year with The Irish Examiner's lifestyle department as a digital and print journalist. I ran three weekly columns, worked in online production, and wrote over five short and long form pieces per day. I also did rotations with the news, business, property, and farming teams.
I have had articles published in a variety of publications, including The Guardian. I was also a regular radio show guest on Today FM while in Ireland. I earned my MA in Journalism from Dublin City University and was the Deputy and News Editor of my college's newspaper.
My name is Alexandria Jacobson, and I'm looking for my next full-time reporter role (open to freelance in the interim, too). I'm based in Chicago but have been working remotely.
My most recent job was working as a full-time reporter for a tech publication, Built In. I wrote long-form features and explainers on a wide variety of tech topics, ranging from artificial intelligence to DEI in the industry.
I'm experienced freelancing for a variety of publications, mostly notably the Chicago Sun-Times. I'm passionate about reporting on education, social justice and investigations, but I'm also skilled at covering a wide variety of topics like business, housing and law. I've taught multimedia journalism classes for the last seven years, and I'm skilled at public speaking, having been selected to moderate panels. I earned both my master's and bachelor's degrees in journalism from Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism.
