Happy President’s Day! Are you looking for a full-time job? A new freelance gig? Well, the Monthly Gig Seekers Thread is here to help.
Sent out monthly on the 15th, it works just like those Twitter threads that are designed to promote writers for hire: reply with a short pitch about who you are and what kind of work you’re looking for, whether it’s full-time, part-time, or freelance.
But this is a Substack thread, so that means unlike Twitter, there’s no character limit. Share a link to your portfolio. Talk more about your career goals. Link to a few pieces of work you’re proud of. Up to you.
Participation isn’t limited to subscribers or West Coast-based journalists. All are welcome. If you already posted in last month’s thread, feel free to post an update on what you’ve been up to or if you’re looking to cover new topics/beats. These days, a lot can change in a month.
The thread will be promoted via the newsletter and our social media all month…until the next thread arrives.

Hey, I'm Rebecca Katz, an LA-based audio journalist and producer. I'm looking for a part-time or full-time gig in audio or print. I was just published in the Los Angeles Times -- https://www.latimes.com/lifestyle/story/2021-03-13/la-affairs-when-i-finally-fell-in-love-my-mother-was-on-her-deathbead. I'm interested in lifestyle and culture writing as well as health journalism. I've been working as a writer and producer at Wondery, the podcast company and I'm currently creating my own podcast series about medical gaslighting.
Hi! My name is Claire Bugos and I'm a reporter, researcher and writer from the SF Bay Area (currently looking to relocate to Chicago). My work focuses on health, science and history. These days, I'm writing about Covid-19 vaccination efforts, issues of environmental justice, advancements in wearable tech and agriculture tech. I run a (relatively new) food blog called Tumble of Onions, where I post recipes and share stories about food like the origins of confit and the history of a pink-fleshed apple.
For Smithsonian Magazine, I write everything from features on how Covid-19 patients may suffer PTSD to aggregated news stories about dreaming octopuses and the hunt for extraterrestrial life: https://www.smithsonianmag.com/author/claire-bugos/?page=1
I'm looking for any kind of gig, be it part-time, full-time or freelance. I have professional experience copyediting, fact-checking, and writing quick-hit stories as well as long-form features.
Hello, I'm Nicholas Slayton, an L.A.-based reporter/editor/researcher/arts journalist/personal trainer and former co-editor of Los Angeles Downtown News. I most recently covered how Los Angeles County did not (at the time) have a plan for vaccinating the unhoused in L.A., and 10 days later they announced guidelines and timetables. I've also recently written about what fans being able to return to MLB games means for the Dodger Stadium vaccine site, and how programs to house homeless people in hotels are doing, one year later for Shelterforce (link to all three bellow). It's been a year this week since the owners of LADTN laid off the entire editorial staff to replace us with people in Arizona, and I am really looking for more regular work, even a full-time job. I know the crunch of deadlines and have so much experience covering everything from the arts to City Hall to homelessness, all while making barely $40k as an editor.
Here's my portfolio and some of those recent pieces I'm proud of:
