West Coast Media Jobs: Spring Gig Seekers Thread...& introducing something new!
westcoastmediajobs.substack.com
You know the drill. Sent out quarterly on the 15th of January, April, July, and October, it works just like those Twitter threads that are designed to promote media folks for hire: reply in the comments below with a short pitch about who you are and what kind of work you’re looking for, whether it’s full-time, part-time, or freelance.
Unlike Twitter, there’s no character limit. Share a link to your portfolio. Talk more about your career goals. Link to a few pieces of work you’re proud of. Up to you. Participation isn’t limited to subscribers or West Coast-based people. All are welcome.
For Students & Recent Grads: The Student Gig Seekers Board
Trying something new!
Lots of college and graduate students are graduating into the job market amid economic uncertainty this spring. Other students are on the hunt for summer internships in these economic times. There’s so much up in the air!
But here’s what I do know for sure: I have a lot of subscribers who are hiring managers and a lot who are students. And I thought this might be a good way to connect both groups.
If you’re a student or recent grad, you can add yourself to this board here: westcoastmediajobs.com/students password is summer2023 (all lowercase)
If you’re a hiring manager, please feel free to check out the board (which has student resumes and clips) using the same link and password.
The page is password-protected to protect the students and grads info from spambots.
Fun fact about me: I landed my very first journalism internship at The News & Observer in Raleigh when a recruiting editor found my resume in a job fair resume book and called me, set on offering me the summer opportunity. So, I’m proof that putting yourself out there can sometimes work in your favor.
My name is Isaac Phan Nay, and I report about climate, science, labour, business and politics. Recently, I wrote about the portable farms feeding Canada's remote communities and the Canadians fighting light pollution to protect dark skies. My work has appeared in Canada's National Observer, Winnipeg Free Press and the Breach.
Previously, I reported for the Toronto Star where I covered breaking news and crime. I investigated a conservation authority’s legal action after developers farmed on provincially significant wetlands and reported how three Cree First Nations pushed back against Ontario over damage to boreal forests.
I also co-hosted and produced Charlatan Live, a weekly community podcast about news, research, arts and sports in Ottawa.
Now, I'm based in Vancouver, looking for work as a reporter or producer. If you're looking for a reporter skilled at in-depth and breaking news coverage, then your search ends here.

Hi -- my name is Graph and I'm a freelance news editor and journalist based in San Francisco. I was most recently a fact-checker and misinformation reporter at the AP, and before that, a politics/policy editor at POLITICO. I primarily handled newsletters there, so that's my specialty -- if you've got a Substack that needs polishing, hit me up!
My areas of interest are politics generally and mis/disinfo specifically, though I'm somewhat undifferentiated and would love to find a policy niche I can own. I'm an accomplished editor, but have spent most of my time on that side of the desk, and I'm hoping to round out my experience as a reporter now.
I'd like to get into full-time work again, though if that's in the form of a temporary contract or on a fill-in basis, that'd be fine by me -- there are some educational opportunities I also have my eye on. Bonus points if I'm able to work alongside more senior journalists and look over their shoulders!
my name is natalie oganesyan, and i’m a freelance entertainment & culture journalist, with bylines in TheWrap, Variety, THR, Slate and more. most recently, i was a TV reporter at TheWrap, where i cultivated expertise in everything from profiles, Q&As, roundups and features, as well as business, ratings and earnings coverage. as a freelancer, i’m looking to get more into cultural criticism and analysis, particularly in the TV and pop culture space. i’m open to any and all commissions, including event coverage, interviews and op-eds. eventually, i’m looking to get back into a full-time role but am currently enjoying part-time and freelance work to expand my beats and reporting interests.
