West Coast Media Jobs: With open roles at People, Lookout Local, The Seattle Times, & more!

westcoastmediajobs.substack.com

Hey everyone,

For months, I've been wanting to add more features to this newsletter, but kept running into roadblocks. I'm also very aware that some people only subscribe for the job postings (and that's fair), so I didn't want to bother people with extra emails if they didn't want them.

But now that Substack has rolled out sections, I’ve added an optional component of the newsletter that you can opt into if you want to receive tips, Q&As, and other features in your inbox 1-3 times a month. I'm calling it West Coast Media Extra and you can opt-in, 100% free, through your WCMJ Substack account page. See the screenshot below.

Just check the box next to “West Coast Media Jobs Extra” and you’re all set!

I'm also still in the process of building out the content for this, so if you have any suggestions, submissions, or ideas, let me know. I'm reaching out to all kinds of journalists to share their job searching, hiring, and work experiences, so if you’d like to share in any way, please get in touch!

All the best,

Mallory

If you’re looking for a job, leave a comment about what you’re looking for on our Spring Gig Seekers Thread. It’s open to everyone; you don’t need to be a subscriber or based on the West Coast to participate.

If you’re a hiring manager, check out these talented journalists:

  • Katherine Abando, a Los Angeles-based journalist who's published in Dot.la, Rom-Com Fest, and the Body. Coverage interests include tech/startups, internet culture, and AAPI identity. Currently, freelancing in the editorial and marketing side while looking for a full-time job.

  • Jake Sundstrom, a Southern California-based journalist writing primarily about sports, politics and how those two things intersect. Looking for full-time roles and freelance opportunities.

The Gig Seekers thread is now sent out quarterly on the 15th day of January, April, July, and October.

  • From the National Association of Black Journalists: The Virtual Mentorship Program will pair college students and journalists of all experience levels with seasoned journalists and public relations professionals who can offer career guidance. There is no fee for participation. (Apply by 7/19/21)

  • From Journalists Alexandra Cardinale and Kate Redding: Check out their newsletter Case By Case, which features free, comprehensive, and current pitches you can use, along with places you can pitch them!

  • Freelance Resources: The Commission Hunter’s rolling pitch opportunities spreadsheet (updated often!); Bitch Media Senior Editor Rachel Charlene Lewis’  great Freelancing Guide/Editorial Contacts spreadsheet.

Things of Note is now open to submissions! Submit your own links, pop culture recs, and stuff of note for future consideration.
